Question by shiz: Will I Get into FSU a regular state University?
Will i get into college? Preferably FSU?
I attend an all gifted school and only take Honors and AP courses. I received a 25 on my ACT. I have 115 hours of community service. I am a member only to 3 clubs. I am also on NJHS, NHS, possibly Mu Alpha Theta. I received superior ratings in piano competitions. I got first place in County Florida History Fair and attended State competition for Florida History Fair. My GPA was a weighted 4.6 and unweighted 3.8 up to my Junior year. Junior year i became clinically depressed due to family deaths and significant family problems. My grades suffered greatly and I believed I would never get past this year, I attempted to kill myself twice. Finally when I was out of this state-of-mind, I began pulling up my grades, but they still suffered. I now have a 4.3 weighted GPA and 3.5 unweighted. Will I get into FSU? and is there a way to explain to FSU admissions about my grades going down? any advices?
I am also trying to start an organization in my community for clinically depressed teens so that they may be able to talk to other recovering or currently depressed teens and relate to them.
I’ve also missed a great deal amount of school (about 55 days) because i gave up. Colleges wont see my attendance record right? Because it is not on my transcript?

Uhhh, sounds like you’re qualified. Also, I don’t know about FSU but on my college application we were encouraged to write one of our application essays about instances that might account for grades slipping, etc, so you might get an opportunity to explain that.
Plus, if you are actually trying to start an organization, they would probably love to hear that. You definitely sound like college material. They’ll probably pee their pants when they see your app.
Attendance should not be on you transcript…but you might want to explain that if you are given the opportunity to account for your grades slipping.

Hahaha… I am smiling because you sound like me last year!
Calm down and just apply… it’s really all you can do. Different universities look for different things, so it’s really up to them.
If it is any consolation, however, that is quite a resume you have there.
Take a deep breath and just apply. No need to explain the GPA thing. All you can do is try.
I promise it will work out.
Do you have a good guidance counselor, or a teacher who knows you well? Instead of trying to explain your own record, which could look defensive, I would ask them to write me a reference and include this information. I would focus on the family deaths, rather than the suicide attempts and the like – you don’t want the school to think you would be a liability due to instability. They need to know that you have overcome your problems and are ready to resume your early academic performance. No, colleges won’t see your attendance record.
You seem like a very bright, brave and ambitious girl who has persevered through a lot of hardships and struggles within the past year, and I think you have every reason to be confident and optimistic about your future.
Despite your grades suffering last year, you still have a stellar GPA, and you also have so many other achievements. You have proven yourself to be a valuable member of the community by volunteering and having the clear desire to want to help others, and of your school by belonging to the honors societies and clubs. I think it would be absolutely awesome if you established an organization in your community for clinically depressed teens, and something could not only help others now, but could continue for years to come after you’ve graduated. If you get the ball rolling, I bet others will keep up the momentum when you had off to college. A recruiter once told me that it’s the quality of your extracurricular activities rather than the quantity that matters, so it’s fine that you only belong to a few clubs or organizations because being the establishing leader of one is far more significant than belonging to a dozen.
You are not only academically gifted, you’re also creatively gifted, and I’m sure that colleges will be impressed with your superior ratings in the piano competitions. They will also be impressed with the academic challenges you’ve sought out by taking AP and Honors classes and competing in the State History Fair.
There are only a few schools exclusively for the gifted in the US (I attended one of them), and if you go to the one in Florida I’m thinking of, then I know it has an extremely strong reputation that FSU and other universities in the region are no doubt aware of, and that would also reflect positively on you. Earning a 4.3 GPA there has more weight than it would a school for normal kids.
FSU doesn’t use the Common Application, so I don’t know what their application is like, but on most there is an area where you are asked if there were any illnesses, traumatic events or anything else that would have impacted your grades. One of my friend’s freshman grades were horrible because her family lived in New Orleans at the time of Katrina, and the trauma and stress of losing her home and moving took a toll on her, and she explained that in her applications. She was still accepted to GW. Admissions committees are not heartless, and they will understand why your grades would have plummeted after deaths in the family. I wouldn’t write about the suicide attempts, but I do think you should explain some of the other problems that year. The fact that prior to that year your grades were strong and you have since worked hard to bring them back up proves that you are an overall very strong student who just suffered a temporary setback for a very understandable reason.
I honestly believe that you’ll get into FSU, especially since you are in-state, so please don’t stress yourself. Just keep working hard, focus on setting up the organization, and make sure you write killer essays and get some strong letters of recommendation, and you will sail in.
Keep the faith.
